Winter Gloves

Today is a good day. It's been quite a while since I heard music that I liked so much, I wanted to drop everything and tell people about it. Winter Gloves, you guys!! WINTER GLOVES!

If this band really was a pair of winter gloves, they would be brightly multicolored, warm and fuzzy, and you might be compelled to throw them up in the air like Mary Tyler Moore once did to her hat.

They hail from Montreal, and they're getting some attention for their LCD Soundsystem cover that was mentioned in SPIN.  I think their songs from About A Girl, the record they released in September, is so much better than that cover.

"Let Me Drive" is unrelenting, with a quick tempo and spotlight stealing late-80s keyboard sounds.  Hand claps and a high hat keep a driving beat, letting the vocals lazily and effortlessly float up to falsetto and back down again.

"Glass Paperweight" is really where I fell in love.  Much slower, it has a haunting melody that is the most perfect thing I've heard in a long time.  It starts out with just an acoustic guitar and builds up slowly and softly.  An underlying layer of crunchy guitar gives it strength but doesn't overpower everything.
