Show Review: Saves The Day 10/9

About a year ago, Saves the Day took down their fancy website and replaced it with a more simple, basic page made on iWeb. See here This site was made to make as more of a thing for the fans. Chris Conley started taking requests and every week or so would post a video of him playing a song submitted by a fan acoustic. It made me realize first how amazing it is that a band, that is marginally successful as far as indie/punk bands go, would do everything they possibly could to still be close with their fans. And second, how amazing some STD songs sound acoustic.

When they announced that Chris and David (the only two original members left) were going on an acoustic tour at smaller venues, I was ecstatic. Which brings me to the show that took place last night at the Shelter.

The show was supposed to start around 7 o'clock but one of the middle support bands were having van trouble and they didn't make it to the show. To me, this = more Saves the Day. I walked over to Chris while he was sitting at their merch table because I had to tell him that I wanted to make sure they played "Ups and Downs". He told me they hadn't rehearsed that one out of the 70 songs they rehearsed, and for a second I thought of shanking him, but decided to turn into the 12 year old fan boy and sound like an idiot and walk away shamelessly. So now I'm 0 for 2 at being cool when meeting my musical idols, I don't even want to think about what I'd say to Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World.

The only opening band took the stage and went by the name of Single File The crowd was a little slow to get moving after waiting around an extra hour or so after the doors opened but Single File tried as hard as they could to bring the energy up. Their lead singer had a voice that reminded me a lot of like early Sum 41 and a lesser known band called Osker (RIP). I thought they were a pretty good opener, and their songs were catchy enough to keep my interest. A small note unrelated to their music: their lead guitar player looked like Lance from the move Out Cold, mustache and all. Anyways, I'm getting off topic. They were a really solid opener, but I just really really wanted to see Saves the Day.

Finally, 9 o'clock rolled around and David and Chris (Hawaiian shirt and all) took the stage. They said their hello's, told a quick story about female sharks being asexual and started off the night with one of the best performances of "This Is Not An Exit" I've ever seen.

They said they were going to play the set list that they had made, take a quick 5 minute break, and come back out and play requests. I can honestly say it was the best 2 hours of my life. They played so many songs that I don't even remember them all but going from memory this is close to what they played and I know I'm missing some: (not completely in order either)

This Is Not An Exit
Rocks Tonic Juice Magic
Eulogy
Deciding
What Went Wrong
See You
Radio (New Song)
Dying Day
Third Engine
Coconut
Wednesday The Third
Stay (New Song)
She
Don't Know Why
Take Our Cars Now!
Sell My Old Clothes, I'm Off To Heaven
Jessie & My Whetstone
(they actually brought a girl on stage to play guitar while Chris sang this one and it was incredible.)
Jodie
Cars And Calories
You Vandal
(after this guy would not stop screaming this song, the girls in front of him wrote Chris a note to please play it so he would stop screaming.)
All Star Me
Blindfolded
My Sweet Fracture
Three Miles Down
Freakish

All in all it was an amazing night, and I strongly urge you to go see this tour when it makes a stop in your town if you are even the smallest Saves the Day fan. Apart from the 2 new songs, the crowd was singing word for word to every song and it sounded incredible. Chris and David were having fun, laughing with the crowd and Chris even asked the crowd to help him remember some lyrics to some of the songs they hadn't played in a while. I forgot my camera, I nearly lost my voice, and I think I got ripped off on the parking situation but it was all well worth it.
